Written by Jartu Mariam McConnell, RN, MSN, FNP-BC Founder, Sensee Foundation of Hope, Inc. It started with a simple idea: bring a little joy to children during Christmas. I remember my childhood in Liberia—how we’d dress up on Christmas morning and go door to door, receiving small gifts of food or money. It was a time of magic, laughter, and belonging. But on one of my visits back home, I saw how far that joy had faded for today’s children. War, poverty, and loss had stolen so much from them. In 2019, I gathered a few friends and hosted a small Christmas meal for about 100 children. We served food, handed out toys, and sang songs. The smiles on their faces told me everything—I knew this couldn’t be a one-time thing.
What began as a holiday gesture soon became a year-round mission. By 2020, we were distributing school supplies. In 2021, we officially launched Sensee Foundation of Hope, Inc. and began supporting widows and young women affected by early childhood marriages and loss. In 2023, we renovated a school. And in 2024, five students sat for and passed the West African Examinations (WAEC)—a milestone that filled our hearts with pride. This isn’t just a nonprofit. It’s a growing community of people who believe that no child should go without education, no widow should suffer in silence, and no young woman should feel abandoned by her society. As we continue this journey, we carry the hope of every smile we’ve witnessed and every story we’ve helped rewrite. Thank you for walking this path with us. – Jartu Want to help write the next story of hope?
