OUR STORY
Sensee Foundation of Hope, Inc.
How We Got Started
Sensee Foundation of Hope started out as a Christmas meal program about 3 years ago. I was trying to bring joy to the children of Liberia during the Holiday season. It was a memory from my childhood, where on Christmas and New Year’s Day, the kids got dressed up and would go to the neighbors to receive gifts which, in those days was in the form of money and food.
Since the end of the 1989 civil war, I have been fortunate to return to my homeland, Liberia on many occasions. During these visits, I observed firsthand the devastating impact of the war on the lives of the people of Liberia, especially the children and the widows. I observed that the children were not enjoying the holiday celebrations like we did when I was a child. It was then that the idea came to me to do something about it. With the help of a small group of friends, including fellow Liberians, we started our first annual Children Christmas Celebration. The first year (2019), we provided food, toys, and refreshments, for over 100 children in the community. The event was a great success and brought joy to the children and their families.
The following year (2020), we decided to do something more impactful than just providing food and toys at this event. In continuation of this new tradition, we decided to address some of the needs of the school age children who attend the program. Based on information we gathered at the previous year’s event, we found out that most of the children were living in poverty and were not attending school because their parents could not afford the basic fees and supplies required to attend school. At the 2020 event, we handed out copy books, pencils, pens and other supplies to the children. The children who were not yet of school age were given Christmas meals and toys.
Earlier in the year, with the positive response from the children, their parents, and members of the community, we decided to expand our program by getting more underprivileged children involved. In 2020, with the heartfelt gifts from our donors, sponsors and partners, we were able to distribute school supplies to over 250 school age children, and over 200 students received school bags.
Where We Are Now
In 2021, while working with the children, we found out that a Christmas meal for a day or a copybook for a semester was not enough. Sadly, we discovered the reason why many of the children did not attend school was not only based on the lack of school supplies, but also because of their living situation; most of these children were living with grandparents who are widows, young women who were forced into early childhood marriages, struggling to provide for themselves and the children. In January 2021, we started a new program for pre-screened widows and victims of early childhood marriages, to assist them with some provisions to sustain their lives. For the widows we provide a monthly allocations of food to supplement the help they are currently receiving from other sources. We provide a care package (a bag of rice, oil, seasoning and salt) based on their confirmed need. For the young women we provide financial support towards vocational training and mentorship to help them become self-sustaining. |
In March, 2021 we created a formal nonprofit organization, SENSEE FOUNDATION OF HOPE, INC., with the specific purpose to serve, train, educate, sponsor and mentor underserved women and children, to sustain themselves and their families, by providing food, education, scholarships and improve personal health.
